Slow Food South East

What is Slow Food?

Slow Food is a global, grassroots organisation, founded in 1989 to prevent the disappearance of local food cultures and traditions. Its purpose is to counteract the rise of fast life and combat people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from and how our food choices affect the world around us.

Since its beginnings, Slow Food has grown into a global movement involving millions of people in over 160 countries, working to ensure everyone has access to good, clean and fair food.

Slow Food believes food is tied to many other aspects of life, including culture, politics, agriculture and the environment. Through our food choices we can collectively influence how food is cultivated, produced and distributed, and change the world as a result.

Anyone can become a member and join this worldwide community.

Slow Food South East

Slow Food South East convivium/chapter brings together the food communities in Wexford, Kilkenny, Waterford and Carlow. It is one of nine chapters of Slow Food Ireland and is one of nearly 1,500 local chapters/convivia around the world.

Our goal is to work together and promote the values of good, clean and fair food in the four counties and work on various campaigns with Slow Food Ireland and our parent Slow Food International, who are based in Italy.

Slow Food also works with the EU and various other food and environmental networks around the world as we work to protect indigenous food cultures.

In the South East, we are fortunate to have a plethora of indigenous food and drink producers, beekeepers, gardeners, grocers, butchers, bakers, hospitality and tourism establishments that honour the values we promote. We are also lucky to have amazing group of individuals, activists, community drivers, farmers’ market and honesty box supporters who champion and support the small food businesses.

Like Taste Wexford, Slow Food South East brings together these like-minded people and communities who champion the ethos of good, clean and fair food in Ireland.

Through our various food networks in the South East, we aim to host regular events, highlighting food businesses and producers who honour these values, support food and community initiatives and celebrate great Irish food with our members and the public.
